What is a coordinate plane?
The coordinate plane just looks like 2 number lines stacked on top of each other like forming a cross.
This is what a coordinate plane looks like:
Main Entry: |
coordinate plane |
Part of Speech: |
noun |
Definition: |
a plane spanned by the x-axis and y-axis in which the coordinates of a point are its distances from two intersecting perpendicular axes |
Example: |
The position of a point in the coordinate plane is determined by its distance from the axes. |
I got that defenition from www.dictionary.com.
-
The horizontal line is the 'x' axis, and the vertical line is the 'y' axis.
-
The middle of the coordinate plane, also called the ORIGIN is where you start.
-
On the left side of the 'x' axis are the negative numbers, on the right side are the positive.
-
On the top half of the 'y' axis are the positive numbers and the bottom half is the negative.
-
Both of the axes' lines can go on forever.
The coordinate plane has 4 QUADRANTS.
-
The quadrants are the different sections on the coordinate plane.
-
Quadrant 1 is where all the positive numbers are.
-
Quadrant 2&4 have both positive and negative numbers.
-
Quadrant 3 is where all the negative numbers are.
How to use a COORDINATE PLANE:
-
Coordinates also known as ordered pairs are what you put on a coordinate plane.
-
An example of an ordered pair is (3,2)
-
The number the left side, which is the '3' in this case, goes on the 'x' axis.
-
The number on the right side, which is the '2' in this case goes on the 'y' axis.
-
Also remember that (3,2) is way different from (2,3)!
-
This is how you plot this pair of coordinates on the COORDINATE PLANE:

i noticed you did an open bracket [
then you put an equal sign
(looks like this) [=
you fergot the closing bracket sign... and it is not needed anyways
