How to subtract multi digit numbers.

First of all you need to know that addition is the opposite of subtraction.

I'll give you a link of my friend Ariana Tanimura who is doing addition if you

don't know how to do addition already.

At the end of this page you'll know how to subtract multi digit numbers too.

It is actually quite simple.

Here is an example of an easy problem.

648-415=233

or 648

       -415

233  Depending on how you like to do subtraction, but

for this page I'll be teaching you how to do subtraction

the second way.

So,   648

            -415

      233

All you do is minus the 5 from the 8.  Pretend you have 8 apples and you take away 5.

You end up with 3.  Then you put that under the line  all the way on the right. Then comes the 4-1.  Lets

subtract with cookies now.

There is 4 cookies and you take 1 away.  Now you have 3.  Put the 3 under the 4 and the 1.  That's how

you do simple subtraction.

Now it's time for the hard part.  Carrying numbers over.   Now here's a problem that you have to

carry a number over because the number you are subtracting from is smaller than the one you are

subtracting with.  Does that make sense?  I hope it does.  I'll take you through the steps.

461        5 11          5 11

  -342  >  461    >    461

   119      -342         -342

                   9           119

As you can see       Here I just did

I crossed out a        simple subtraction.

                      tens place and

                      added ten to

                      the ones place.

                      that made it so

                      I can subtract

                      normally.

Here is a link to some subtraction games to help you practice your

subtraction.

OK, more examples would be helpful. Place Value vocabulary would be appropriate. You did not finish your first example. Your second example is written completely differently from the first and therefor is hard to understand. More links please.
