Ariana's Guide to Adding Multi Digit Numbers!

Do you want to know how to add multi digit numbers?

Then here is the perfect place.

What exactly is a Multi Digit Equation?

So a multi digit equation is just a regular addition problem. But instead of just using one number you use multiple numbers

Multi means more than one

Digit means a number

Equation means an expression with a solution.

So a multi digit Equation is a more than one number expression

ing Multi Digit

           ↓

How are they Solved?

Multi digit equations are usually solved by doing each set of columns individually by its self. You just do the basic adding and carrying. I will show you how to do that below.

What is a Multi Digit Equation?

    •   Steps to solve an addition multi digit equation

For example:             123+456=579.

Or...                  123

             +456

               579

      •   A multi digit equation is basically just a regular one digit equation.

So let’s use our imagination, and let’s imagine that the only numbers in the equation are 3+6.

So 3+6 is a very simple and easy addition problem to solve.

      3

    +6

      9

So the answer is 9. So you put a nine in the ones place.

Now imagine that the only numbers are 2 and 5.

2+5=7. Easy huh?

      2

    +5

      7

So the answer is 7. The number 7 goes into the tens place.

Lastly imagine that 1 and 4 are the only numbers in the equation.

       1

    +4

      5

You add those to get 5.

Then the 5 goes into the hundreds place.

Guess what? You are done.

The 9 went into the ones place.

The 7 went into the tens place.

The 5 went into the hundreds place.

       123

    +456

       579

So the answer is 579

What if you have this equation?

678+345=1023

Or....        678

       +345

       1023

Don’t understand?

Have no fear because Ariana is here to help.

So with this equation, when you put it in to a single digit equation it is a little bit different.

What you must do it just think about the same as the first equation.

You do 8+5.

  8

+5

 13

Which equals 13?

But I bet you are wondering well I can’t put 13 in the ones place because then I would be using the ones along with the tens place.

So what you do is. Just take the number that is in the ones place. This in this case is the 3.

Then what you do is you carry the 1 from the 13 to the tens place.

    l

  678

+345

    3

When I say carry I basically mean add.

Next you use your imagination again and you add 7+4+1=12. [you add 1 because that is the number you carried over.]

    l

  678

+345

     23

So then you put a 2 in the tens place and carry a 1 over to the hundreds place.

Imagination time again. imagine you just have 6+3+1. And that equals 10. so then you put the 0 down in the hundreds and add the 1 to the thousands place.

so 1+0=1.

In the End your problem will look like this.

 l l

 678

+345

1023

So if you understand that then you can move on to doing equations such as...

  1234

+5678

  6912

So with this equation it’s exactly the same. So don’t get all freaked out because it has more numbers. It’s exactly the same adding and carrying over numbers. Just remember it’s the same. it’s the same it’s the same it’s the same.

Now you are done. You should know how to add multi digit numbers now.

                                                                         hope you learned a lot.

                                                                                              :]]

                                        Things to Remember

      • Each column is its own problem.
      • Don’t forget to carry over.
      • Multi Digit equations that have more numbers than others are the same as every other multi digit number.

                   Extra

Want to know how to subtract multi digit numbers? Then...you should go to my good friend michael chamizo's page. His Page will teach you how to do the opposite of adding multi digit numbers. So I'm hoping that you know what the opposite of addition is. So I guess if you dont i will tell you. it is Subtraction. Duh.

Also if you need help to understand addition then you can also check out David's page on how to add.

Great page, Ariana!
I really liked all your info, but you should fix the top part of your page where all the [bigger] text kind of overlaps just a little bit.
Also, you might want to adds some pictures!
Other than that, it's terrific! <3

Very, very colorfeul though a little scrunched.
Note: you could try double spacing it

Anonymous said

at 1:16 pm on Nov 5, 2007

maybe you can make the font bigger because the words are scrunched

try to get the math problems on word and copy and paste instead of using spacebar.

Nice page mine is awesome you are going to get a great grade

change the format, the words are kinda squished, but besides that it's an A page =)

Anonymous said

at 5:19 pm on Nov 5, 2007

i like it, but the colors are kind of confusing. and the words are smushed together and kind of small. just scrolling through it, it looks like it's hard to read. the examples are good though. good job.

just to add what i said before, at the bottom where your linking out to other people's pages, you might want to get rid of the comment, because you can only comment if you're logged in. so if you're not one of mr. martin's students who has a wiki, you can't leave a comment. just to let you know.

at 6:54 pm on Nov 5, 2007

hey maybe you can make your fonts a bit bigger when your explaining so it looks more clear:]just a bit bigger

Hey Ariana! Everything looked awesome (especially the colors) but when you wrote "So let’s use our imagination, and let’s imagine that THAT the only numbers in the equation are 3+6." --you wrote THAT twice and it didn't make sense. Otherwise, Great!

Very nice. My only complaint is the lack of place value in your description. You talk about columns and carrying, but don't explain why we do that.
