Adding and Subtracting Integers

Adding and Subtracting Integers

What`s an integer?

An integer  is a number with no fractional part.

It`s a positive or negative whole number or zero.

There are two types of integers, a postive integer and a negative integer

Examples of integers:

Negative intgers --> -1 , -1.34 ,  -2  , -2.38 , -3  ,-3.24 ,- 4  ,- 4.43 ,  etc.

Positive integers --> 1 , 1.25 , 2 , 2.16 , 3 , 3.15 , 4 , 4.37 , etc.

An integer is positive if it`s greater than zero and negative if it`s less than zero.

Zero is defined as neither negative nor positive.

Positives+Positives

Adding a positive integer plus another positive integer  is  very easy.

It`s just like adding regular whole numbers.

So, if you have a positive number plus a another positive number,

then you would just add the two numbers regularly.

Example of adding a Positive+Positive:

Ex.1

(positive)+7 + (positive)+5= (positive)+12

Ex.2

4.15 + 3.05= 7. 20

Easy much?

You can add positive integers mentally.

But, you can also use a number line to add/subtract them too.

Using a number line to add/subtract intgers is very easy to use.

A number line is a straight horizantal line that plots negative and positive numbers.

Example of a number line:

Positive+Negative

Adding positives and negatives togther is easy too, but there`s a slight twist in it.

When you add a negative and a positive it's like subtracting.

You substract the integer with the largest absolute value from the integer with the smallest absolute value.

After you get an answer, tack on the sign of the interger with the largest absolute value.

Example of adding Positive+Negative:

Ex.1

6 + -4= 2

Since adding positive with a negative is like subtracting, in the example above you would take the integer with the largest absolute value

and subtract it with  the integer that has the smallest absolute value.

In the example above, the largest absolute value is 6 and the smallest absolute value is 4.

So, 6-4=2.

Ex.2

-5.55 + 2.22= -3.33

You do the same step like you did in example one.

You subtract the integer with the smallest absolute value from the integer that has the largest absolute value.

So, -5.55 + 2.22 = -3.33

Negative+Negative

When you add a negative with another negative number, you add it regulary.

Just like how you add a positive plus a positive.

You just add the two integers together.

Ex.1

-4 + -5 = -9

Ex.2

-2.15 + -1.15 = -3.30

wow, your page is really cool. [= lots of information; very accurate. btw! thanks fer the suggestion on helping my page[:

A nice page about adding and subtracting with positive and negative numbers, but you have misled your readers to think that decimal mumbers are integers. You should change your examples to remove the decimal numbers, as decimals are not integers.
