ADDING FRACTIONS IS COOLER THEN YOU'LL EVER THINK!

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 5 months ago

    How do you add fractions?

Adding fractions isn't as hard as you think.

If you just follow these simple steps, you will find

adding fractions is really fun, easy, and not that difficult[:

Here are three words that may help you understand

a little bit more about fractions and their components:

               frac·tion:

  Mathematics.
1. a number usually expressed in the form a/b.
a is the numerator and b is the denominator.

The definition for the numerator and denominator are as follows:

            nu·mer·a·tor:

2.

Arithmetic. the term of a fraction, usually above the line,

that indicates the number of equal parts that are to be

added together; the dividend placed over

      de·nom·i·na·tor:

3. Arithmetic. that term of a fraction, usually written under the line,

that indicates the number of equal parts into which the unit is divided; divisor

Here are all the examples that shows you step by step on how to add fractions:

Step 1: Build each fraction so that both denominators are equal.

                                  Example:    tex2html_wrap_inline46

Step 2: Add the numerators of the fractions.

                                       tex2html_wrap_inline50

Step 3: The denominators will be the denominator

                              of the built-up fractions.

                                       tex2html_wrap_inline48 = answer

Step 4: Reduce into smaller number, if needed.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators

   un·like:

1. different, dissimilar, or unequal; not alike

Here are the simple steps you have to follow for adding fractions with unlike denominators:

  • Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of the fractions
  • Rename the fractions to have the LCD
  • Add the numerators of the fractions
  • Simplify the Fraction

  •            Examples:

I hope i helped you have a better understanding about adding

fractions and adding fractions with unlike denominators.

A good page. Nice clear description. I would have liked a bit more information about finding common denominators and simplifying the sums. I liked some of the pictures that you ended up not using.
